Are you still validating or already in control? Key performance indicators up-dated daily and available everywhere with 3M Clinical Business Intelligence

Valid and updated key performance indicators are necessary in order to manage hospitals and their internal processes. This applies to management as well as to the various staff departments (controlling, medical controlling, quality management, …) and executive functions (chief medical directors, heads of department, …). However, such diversity also imposes many different demands in terms of key performance indicators.

For example, results have to be concentrated and presented, and communication is another important aspect (digital versus paper). 3M Clinical Business Intelligence is a combined system that meets the requirements of all the various recipients. The fully automated processes supply valid and up to date results for virtually all recipients. With this system reports can be supplied continuously to all principals, with an authorization concept that ensures that each recipient is only able to see those results that are intended for him.

voice 4 medicine – dictation and voice recognition “everywhere”

4voice is presenting a more wide-ranging solution for digital speech processing at conhIT: Digital dictation on PCs and with portable dictation machines is already being extensively used. With fixed dictation systems, integrated within the HIS, the dictation is assigned directly to the patient. With the voice4mobile app physicians can now also make use of mobile dictation with specific patient allocation throughout the clinic. Mobile dictation which has already been started on an iPh-one/iPad/iPod Touch can be stored on an interim basis while the user is “on the move” and then completed on a PC, with the inclusion, if necessary, of laboratory readings, visual information or preliminary clinical findings. The app can also be used to send dictation for background speech recognition. Extended speech recognition via the cloud is also being presented at conhIT by 4voice.

New developments for HIS, RIS, PACS and DMS

Agfa HealthCare puts clinical histories on the iPad and iPhone with ORBIS Mobile Edition (ORBIS ME!). Without the need for a notebook or PC, it enables doctors and nursing staff to access case data, diagnoses and findings, therapies, reports on operations, forms, laboratory readings, vital signs and image data.

Using Agfa Managed Services (AMS) it is possible for hospitals to make a precise selection of operator solutions from the range of Agfa HealthCare services. AMS consists of flexible, harmonized modules which can be individually selected to meet customers’ special requirements. As a result IT platforms can be operated more effectively in order to satisfy specific needs. The benefits are obvious: guaranteed high standards, support that is available 24x7, readily accessible systems and a fixed service fee to facilitate financial planning.

Two new AddOns are now available with ORBIS KIS to make the user’s work even easier. Brief in-patient documentation provides for the same sort of rapid data compilation and documentation that is available with the system for medical practices. The AddOn also clearly presents all the requirements and findings associated with cost centre management. Geriatric documentation supports the workflow for defining therapeutic objectives and the corresponding team discussions. A large number of geriatric tests and assessments are also displayed within the AddOns, to assist with diagnosis and courses of treatment.

IMPAX Heartstation has been designed for the electronic distribution of ECG data, with the electronic display of ECG graphs, archiving in IMPAX and recall from ORBIS as well as links with different ECG systems. Agfa HealthCare is also presenting new features of ORBIS RIS, ORBIS Cardiology, HYDMedia and IMPAX PACS.

CompuGroup Medical sets new standards

Together with data security, the establishment of networks and secure communication across sectoral bounda-ries are the main issues in healthcare today. Hospitals, rehabilitation clinics and social facilities are being linked both horizontally and also vertically, and are providing scope for additional service providers.

This creates a demand for solutions that cross sectoral boundaries, promote networks and offer a high level of data security, and that can moreover be perfectly integrated within the new group structures and are responsive to new developments.

With the wider possibilities offered by CGM Future.net ,CompuGroup Medical is setting new standards in electronic networking and communication. CGM Future.net demonstrates the progress that has been achieved with the widespread introduction of networking in the healthcare sector and that this future solution has already become reality. The harmonized, cross-sectoral exchange of data links medical practices, medical care centres, hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, pharmacies, and now the patients too. For the latter it is now a simple matter to use the internet to arrange appointments for treatment, order prescriptions online, talk to their physicians in online consultations, or look at their clinical findings.

Patient and treatment data can be quickly, securely and efficiently exchanged by means of CGM Future.net. Using modern, web-based technology, access is available from any location and at any time. Clinics can obtain valid, structured data in advance from referring medical practices or the medical care centre, which can be fed directly into the hospital information system. Rehabilitation clinics can make timely use of their resources and have immediate access to the hospital’s discharge letter.

Subsequent therapy can begin within the prescribed seven-day period. The houseman or specialist receives all the relevant information from the hospital or rehabilitation clinic without delay. They are kept informed at all times about the patient’s condition and location and, if needed, can intervene to provide support. Patients benefit because the processes are perfectly intermeshed, creating the ideal basis for rapid recovery. Conse-quently, all those involved experience significantly improved care quality as a result of the innovativeness of CompuGroup Medical.

Hospital IT goes mobile

There is an increasing need for mobile solutions for everyday clinical use. The response by ID, in collaboration with physicians, therapists and nursing staff, has been to develop mobile applications which also support clinical processes in other ways, augmenting the use of PCs in the ward.

ID has developed ID DIACOS® Spezial to provide ergonomic solutions for registering information in the specialist fields of psychiatry and geriatrics as well as in palliative and intensive care and pain relief. Diagnosis and therapy as well as various assessments and team conferences can be docu-mented using mobile applications even while treatment is in progress. Compared with the fixed location PC solution, the forms have a high recognition value and improvements have also been made to facilitate their use with various mobile terminals. The mobile versions also incorporate customers’ requirements from the “normal” solutions. These include expanding the system to include patient lists and a therapist’s view to show a daily or weekly overview. Rights management has also been expanded to permit the selection of stored users.

The eMedication field requires mobile, expert knowledge in a patient context. With ID DIACOS® PHARMA information about medications, as well as their documentation and investigation, will also be possible in a mobile form. A further development of the ID controlling tool, ID EFIX® Geo, adds a new quality to evaluations of geo-data, for example through the explorative analysis of potential admitting physicians in the context of their own range of services. For the international market the ICD search should be of particular interest with reference to the iPad and iPhone.

Taking action before the patient’s condition becomes critical

Intelligent.Decision.Support (i.DS) from LOWTeq is an alarm system for intensive care wards that is activated before a critical situation has arisen. The combination of rules engine and neuronal net-work constantly compares a pattern, comprising numerous monitoring and laboratory readings as well as respiration parameters, with current patient data. This provides the physician with a constant and accurate overview of the patient’s condition, enabling pre-emptive action to be taken. If a critical situation arises i.DS activates an alarm. The supplementary module, integrated in the patient data management system (PDMS) from LOWTeq, improves patient safety as well as relieving some of the pressure on staff.

Analytical tools for medical care and outpatient centres, and online patient portals

New evaluation and analytical possibilities have been developed by mediatixx for ixx.report, the add-on module for the ixx.concept editions MVZ/Ambulanz and ixx.vianova. It is now possible to analyze and direct the flow of out-patients more effectively.

According to specific requirements, ixx.report will display, in graphic and tabular form, the times and numbers of out-patients in the practice during the course of a week, a month or even several years. With so-called ABC analyses it is now possible to evaluate referring physicians in terms of both the case as well as the turnover level. The geo-analysis module for ixx.report uses Open-StreetMap to provide a clear and easily understandable display showing the geographical catchment area of patients and of referring physicians.

During the second half of 2012 mediatixx intends to introduce its ixx.patient software for online communication between patients and practices. Safeguarded by a user name and password, it will enable patients to take readings at home and feed them into the portal. It will also be possible to order prescriptions and referrals, thus reducing the amount of telephone usage in the practice.

All patient entries will be encoded and relayed via a secure connection directly to the mediatixx medical information systems – ixx.isynet, ixx.concept, ixx.comfort. They can be entered in the filing system and a short text can be sent as a response.

Using IT to safeguard the quality of treatment – Solutions for care manage-ment and patient safety in the hospital

Nursing care is a vital component in the healing process, for which coordination between physicians and nursing staff is essential. This is just one good reason for making electronic documentation an integral part of the nursing care process. This task is dealt effectively by the scalable information system MCC, which enables all the professional groups to operate within the same system. All the information obtained by nursing staff is available immediately to physicians on other wards and can be applied to ongoing treatment.

To provide a more effective overview under hectic everyday working conditions the patient graph incorporates all the necessary information and presents it at the nursing staff’s place of work. Ac-cording to requirements, the graph enables vital parameters, the fluid balance and many other notes to be processed, along with graphic displays. The range of functions is completed by wound documentation together with integrated image management.

Moreover, with MCC.PFLEGE clinics can also create and link various catalogues for the purposes of assessment and care diagnosis, as well as preparing targets and measures. MCC displays the entire nursing care process in accordance with LEPWAUU® and supports the result-oriented care assess-ment ePA-AC© and the recording of highly complex care measures (PKMS).

MCC not only enables clinics to optimize their processes but also to improve patient safety and doc-umentation security. MEIERHOFER is presenting innovative solutions at conhIT 2012 not only for implementing data protection concepts and for coping with breakdowns in central systems but also for avoiding errors in the dispensing of medications.

IT supports the path to more personalized healthcare

"Personalized healthcare and the role of information technology" – this subject forms the focus of the display by Siemens Healthcare at this year’s conhIT. A mobile touch application system is availa-ble on the stand to show visitors the Siemens concept for personalized healthcare. Explanations are also provided of current projects and applications which already form a realistic basis for the world of healthcare of the future.

Siemens’ hospital information systems (HIS) are increasingly linking knowledge with organizational processes and providing support for the decisions made by those providing treatment in order to filter out the right information from a constantly expanding flow of data. As part of this process it is vital to bring medical and organizational data closer to the patient.

Siemens is working on a number of different applications for mobile communication with the patient and is presenting some commercially viable solutions. In order to be able to link up this information throughout the entire chain of treatment a number of solutions are available, such as Soarian Inte-grated Care, which involve practicing physicians and medical care centres in the Siemens HIS in order to achieve integrated planning of appointments and resources.

Managed Services provide support for the fundamental aspects in this concentration process

In many cases hospitals are unwilling to continue to cope on their own in their efforts to master the future challenges presented by IT. Consequently hospitals find it an increasingly attractive option to outsource part of their IT management. As can be seen at conhIT, Siemens’ range encompasses individual remote services as well as taking over full operational responsibility. HIS-integrated dictation – also mobile with iMedOne®

By going mobile iMedOne®, the HIS from Tieto, now allows dictation on the move, directly from the HIS context, using a system that is fully integrated in the HIS and without the need for any special hardware. With the mobile dictation system on display at conhIT 2012 Tieto is presenting an effec-tive addition to its “iMedOne Mobile” application.

All doctors are familiar with the situation: after examining a patient, and on the way to the next patient, notes have to be dictated for an anamnesis, a clinical report or another medical certificate. But maybe the ward office is too far away, or the doctor may be on another ward. The clinical report is urgently needed, and there is no suitable offline solution. With its mobile dictation app Tieto can now provide the ideal way of augmenting the iMedOne mobile app.

Mobile dictation relieves doctors from such administrative tasks as formatting or spell-checking when preparing medical certificates and clinical reports, allowing them to devote more time to providing medical treatment for their patients. The parallel deployment of professional staff to write up these reports reduces the time taken to prepare a medical certificate.

Doctors can dictate their texts while on the move, and send the completed text to the transcription service for typing up. As a result patients can leave the clinic with an almost completely written medical certificate which can then be presented to their GP to enable him to continue with the treatment.

PACS-II: Comprehensive image management outside radiology too

In Germany there is also a growing trend towards image management in areas other than radiology. This requires a platform that can encompass left heart catheter measuring stations, ECG, EEG and ultrasound equipment, endoscopy, digital cameras and operating theatre equipment, ophthalmology, dentistry, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine as well as other PACS. This has led to the creation of the new generation of PACS, PACS-II.

JiveX meets all these requirements. In order to seamlessly integrate all image-related hospital pro-cesses in all aspects of clinical processes this solution, based on HL7, XML or GDT, produces a uniform DICOM worklist for all modalities. To ensure that everything operates smoothly, central web distribution is essential, recording all the incoming image data and integrated within the hospital information system (HIS). The source of the images is immaterial. JiveX operates with a diversity of systems, providing a standard viewer. As a result the image management platform becomes a central access point for all image data in the clinical workflow.
